"With Karate I'll kick your ass, back
to Tienemen Square, ooh yeah mother-fucker I'll kick your
fuckin derrière! You broke the rules. Now I'll pull
out all your pubic hair!"
The sound of Jack Black, the lead vocalist
of Tenacious D just barely rose above the hundreds of fans
belting out every single line. Right off the bat the only
criticism of this show was the crowd. It seemed as if everyone
in the crowd had to prove how cool they were by showing that
they knew all the words to this somewhat underground musical
comedy sensation. But the show was way too good to let a couple
hipster jackasses bring me down off the cloud I call Tenacious
D.
Tenacious D was originally born as
a spin-off of Mr. Show, the brilliant sketch comedy show that
formerly aired on HBO until its recent cancellation.Tuesday
night April 18th Tenacious D rocked the Bowery Ballroom as
hard any acoustic duo could blasting through an hour and a
half set that included all their songs and a few surprises.
The highlight of the show was definitely
their encore which included a skit of the The D trying out
for a traveling show of Tommy the musical. I can't go into
too many specifics but all can say is that it ended with JB
(Jack Black) giving himself a blowjob, and KG (Kyle Gas) committing
suicide with a handgun.
What really makes The D work so well
live is the fact that they are great musicians. Their harmonies
were breathtaking and JB's voice has such range it is as if
he can sing any note at any time. They rocked through crowd
favorites like "Sex Supreme" and slowed it down with songs
like "Jesus Ranch," a song which allowed the crowd to really
soak up JB's tremendous vocals.
The sold out crowd was was loaded with
celebrities such as John Cusack, Andy Richter, John C. Reilly,
and David Cross (Mr.Show). I asked my friend Andy who had
never heard "The D," prior to that evening what he thought
of their performance and he responded, "best show ever, man."
I am going to end with a quote which I believe may give you
a brief glimpse into the world of Tenacious D and was stated
by JB in the midst of there fabulous set. "We can't make love
to all of you tonight, but we can make love to most of you,"
and take it from me, they did.
