Breakestra
Funks it up
LA's Root Down club served up a super funky feast this week. Breakestra,
a live acid jazz/hip-hop band bumped a funky fresh jam.
Jurassic 5 DJ Numark made a sneak attack early in the night and mixed
up a surprise batch of dope beats. The J5 turntablist got down on
the wheels of steel to get the crowd hyped with his trademark old
school flavor. While Numark was blowing up the spot, b-boys were flexing
their breaking skills on the dance floor. The vibe was positive and
the crowd gave the break dancers space to bust headspins and handglides.
As Numark's set was rolling along, the Root Down was quickly filling
up to a capacity crowd.
Next up was the Breakestra, who came correct. This underground crew
is bound to blow up, the Root Down crowd was feeling their hot set.
The Breakestra is a live funk/hip-hop band with two drummers, keyboardist,
guitarist, bass/cello player, vocalists, and horn section.
These cats are the meters for the new ill-enium, an old school influenced
funk band breaking it down with what is most definitely hip-hop flavor.
The dual drummers kept the set rolling with non-stop, body-rocking
break beats. The brass blowers, lyricists, and organist were supreme,
and kept the vibes flowing with funky rhythms. During the mix, the
Breakestra jammed funked out renditions of Jurassic 5, Gangstarr,
and a grip of hip hop classics.
The Breakestra is a strictly underground band, as far as I know they've
only got a 7 inch available. You can also check these funk masters
on a dope compilation called The Funky Precedent.
