What is a shadow exactly? I'm not speaking about a reflection of light here or a silhouette, Shadow is a highly skilled DJ, who fuses musical elements from the 60's, 70's, 80's, funk, hip hop, acid jazz, you name it, into his stylings. DJ shadow wrecked Club Gabah this week in LA, blowing up the spot in a slamming turntablist performance.

I heard the Shadow was to emerge at a tiny club to rock a super underground set. After enduring an excruciatingly long line into the miniscule venue, I gained entry and found Jurassic 5 DJ Numark spinning while Cut Chemist looked on from the side of the stage. Numark got the crowd bouncing as the crowd was waiting for the reclusive DJ Shadow to approach the ones and twos.

I've gained a whole new appreciation for DJ Shadow as he took to the stage and immediately began mixing an insane set. The set was swinging back and forth from funk to hip hop to jazz to disco. Then, recreating the infamous "Brainfreeze" performance between the two DJ's last winter, Cut Chemist squared off against Shadow. The two DJ's battled on four tables and blew everyone's minds.

DJ Shadow is an ill DJ who is innovating the hip hop universe. Experiencing Shadow's techniques first hand was a rare treat.
