DJ Revolution Puts it Down

The Wake Up Show, hosted by DJ Revolution and King Tech, is one of the dopest underground programs in the hip hop community. Each Saturday night, the show broadcasts worldwide from the Los Angeles studio. The world famous Wake Up Show's format opens with Revolution spinning ill mixes while emcees of all sorts roll by to freestyle, promote their shit, or just hang. I got the chance to hit up Revolution before he stepped up to the tables.

Ill advisor: DJ Revolution, what have you been up to? Any new ish coming out soon?

Revolution: Yea, I just wrapped up some production work on a track on Phife's new album, a cut with Pete Rock. Also just finished the new album, In 12's We Trust.

Ill Advisor: So how did the new album come out?

Revolution: It's a tight blend of traditional hip hop and turntablism. It's got some dj collaborations and skits that drive home some points I'm tryin to make in the album. Pick that shit up.

Ill advisor: That's dope, let me ask you, who do you think are the most skilled dj's out there right now tearing shit up?

Revolution: Well, I've got to give mad props to Qbert, Baboo, Pete Rock�let me see, Premiere's shit is tight. Qbert's not for everybody, I'm not really too into abstract stuff myself. I'm wanting people to understand and really feel my music.

Ill Advisor: Who are some guests of the Wake Up Show lately?

Revolution: De La Soul was in last week, that was dope. Phife rolled through when he was in town, Eminem's been by. Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Sadat should be droppin in tonight.

Ill Advisor: Who are some of your influences as a turntablist?

Revolution: I've got to say some of the founders of what we call "turntablism" or dj'ing today were Cash Money, Jazzy-Jeff, Grand Master Flash.

Ill Advisor: Who are some of the most slept on artists in hip hop right now?

Revolution: DJ Radar out of Phoenix. I think Cali Agents are probably the most slept on, also D.I.T.C. People need to check them out.

After wrapping up our interview, the Show began and Rev proceeded to the dj booth to wreck it with an ill mix down of some of the freshest shit out. Up in the mix was some new, unreleased Xibit, a rare Gza cut, and the new De la/Beastie Boys track off the new album. Dj Rev continued to flex his skills by cutting and scratching at breakneck speeds over a slamming 160 b.p.m. track which the wake up show producers created earlier on three tables.

Later on that night, a hot upcoming crew called Epidemic got down with an ill freestyle performance. Be on the lookout for these cats, they're bound to blow up with their raw stylings and intelligent rhymes. Sadat-X also came through, first just chilling out, then gracing the mic with some professional grade lyracism. Sadat's one of my favorite emcees, it was dope catching him freestyle live in the studio. The X-man tore shit up with his ill flows, be on the look out for his dope new single and album.
